Arnold's penchant for the stage and limelight was evident from an early age, when she would perform for church congregations at the age of four. Her parents encouraged her to audition for a play at the age of eight, and she landed a part in The Me Nobody Knows soon after. Arnold continued to land minor roles at theaters and supper clubs, but her first real big breaks would come with the advanced acting education she would receive. Arnold was accepted to the prestigious drama high school, Fiorello H.

LaGuardia High School, which has produced a myriad of talented actors including Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Her entrance into the LaGuardia School coincided with the beginning of Arnold's career upswing.

Utilizing the knowledge obtained at the school, Arnold began receiving movie roles, beginning with a role in the Woody Allen/Paul Mazursky movie Scenes from a Mall. Arnold's breakthrough and first Emmy nomination came at the young age of seventeen, where she used her natural talents that were refined through education to play the part of heroine Zena Brown in the soap opera Ryan's Hope with astounding success. She continued in this role until the series ended in January of 1989. Three years later, Arnold would team up with Martin Lawrence to produce the popular sitcom Martin, which ran from 1992 to 1997. She would continue to pair with Lawrence for a number of successful performances on the silver screen including Big Momma's House¸ and Wild Hogs. Currently, Arnold is probably best known for her role in the smash television series Everybody Hates Chris, a comedy produced by comedian Chris Rock, loosely based on his own upbringing.
